Geography: Lipetsk is located in the central part of European Russia and borders Belarus and Ukraine. The region's topography is mostly a plain and 85% of the land is considered "black earth."

Economy: Lipetsk is primarily an industrial region with an economy based in mining. Geologists have identified 300 unexplored areas of mineral wealth in the region. Since the Soviet era Lipetsk has been well known as a tractor-building area and even today the Lipetsk Tractor Plant is the sole producer in Russia of universal wheeled tractors. In addition to tractors, the factory produces street-cleaning machinery, tractor-based welders, excavators and loaders. In November 2005, Lipetsk was named a special economic zone for manufacturing.
