Geography: Kostroma is located in central European Russia and shares a border with the Ivanovo, Yaroslavl, Volgograd, Kirov, and Nizhny Novgorod regions. Most of the area is a plain with some slight elevation in the center of the territory. The Volga river and its tributaries the Kostroma, Uzhnya and Vetluga flow through the region.

Urban population: 67%, Rural population: 33%

Economy: Since forests cover 75% of the region, important timber and woodworking industries have developed. Traditionally, Kostroma was a center of jewelry-making and these traditions continue.
