Yuri Gagarin (Юрий Алексеевич Гагарин) was born March 9, 1934 in the village of Klushino in the Smolensk region of Russia. Gagarin achieved international stardom when he became the first man in space – a major victory for the Soviet Union during the Cold War. A national hero, his death at 34 shocked the world. Gagarin is one of the few Soviet heroes whose reputation has survived the collapse of the Soviet Union and he continues to inspire respect and admiration in modern Russia.
