Vasily Aleksanyan (Василий Георгиевич Алексанян) was born December 15, 1971, in Moscow. A lawyer and businessmen, Aleksanyan briefly served as vice president of the now-defunct oil company Yukos. Aleksanyan was held in pre-trial detention from April 2006 until January 2009, when he was released due to severe health problems. He died on October 2, 2011.
Lyudmila Alexeyeva was born on July 20, 1927, in Yevpatoria, Crimea. She is one of Russia’s most prominent human rights activists and a key member of the opposition movement.
