Tom Balmforth

Tom Balmforth was born in England. As the son of a foreign correspondent, he lived much of his childhood abroad, in Russia and Belgium, but was educated in England at boarding schools. He graduated from Bristol University with a B.A. in French and Russian and then reсeived a Master’s degree in Politics, Security, and Integration from the School of Slavonic and East European Studies in London. After completing the Russia-focused Masters at the end of the summer, Tom joined Russia Profile in Moscow in October of 2009.

The King’s Speech

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s speech to the State Duma on Wednesday had the ring of a political manifesto ahead of the 2012 presidential elections, politicians and analysts said. In an apparent dig at President Dmitry Medvedev’s image as a reformer and force for modernizing Russia, Putin warned lawmakers against “liberal experiments” that could mar Russia’s drive to become one of the top five economies in the world.

Rights and the Right

Moscow City Court on Monday banned the Movement Against Illegal Migration (DPNI), a leading nationalist organization, after its activities were found to be “extremist.” The move was welcomed by Russia’s top hate crime monitors. The court’s decision was made at the behest of Moscow State Prosecutors. It took into account a range of evidence, including speeches by the organization’s leader Alexander Belov at the unprecedented nationalist riots of December 2010, in which he told thousands about the need to form “defensive battalions,” Gzt.Ru reported.

Containing Funds

Ukraine is seeking almost €750 million in funding to seal the nuclear reactor at Chernobyl, that sparked the world’s worst nuclear catastrophe 25 years ago. But the recent disaster at the Fukushima power plant in Japan may make it harder to get the money together. Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich will host an international conference in Kiev starting Tuesday, where he will court donors for a key new containment unit that will be slid over Chernobyl’s reactor number four.

May the Force Be With You

The run-up to the 50th anniversary of the first ever flight into space was rather short of glorious. The countdown to the landmark celebration was marred by delayed space launches, possible sackings in the Space Agency and, most embarrassingly, the crash of a rocket in December of 2010, which cost the Russian taxpayer 2.5 billion rubles. Last week Prime Minister Vladimir Putin announced an increase in funding and reiterated ambitious plans for Russia’s space flights. But Roskosmos’ Chief Anatoly Perminov came back yesterday with a scathing verdict of the space program, in what may have been his last address to the Federation Council.

The Unusual Suspects

A remotely detonated explosion ripped through Minsk’s central metro station at rush hour Monday evening, killing at least 12 and injuring 149 in a supposed act of terror. Strongman President Alexander Lukashenko said those responsible for the attack on Belarus, a country with no record of Islamic extremism or terrorism of this scale, may have come from home or abroad. Several suspects were arrested on Tuesday, Deputy General Prosecutor Andrei Shved told journalists without revealing their identities.

Of Wreaths and Wrath

Russia and Poland’s heads of state on Monday laid flowers in Smolensk, marking one year since 96 Poles, including the president, died in a plane crash on Russian soil. But the memorial was overshadowed by a squabble over the wording of a commemorative plaque. The late president’s identical twin brother, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, also boycotted the official ceremonies in memory of the disaster that was supposed to spark reconciliation between Russia and Poland.

Russia’s LiveJournal, the cult online blogging platform for free political discussion, is being sabotaged by hackers trying to impress Kremlin ideologues in the run-up to the election cycle, Russian bloggers claim. As RuNet becomes an increasingly powerful tool for opposition politicians, the Kremlin could be eager to have hackers in its wings who can disable it – or so the theory goes. In fact, other explanations have been aired, but mainstream blogger opinion seems to maintain that the state is behind two weeks of attacks on the uncensored blogging platform widely used by the opposition.
